That day, at every stop, the driver flung the door open with a flourish and tapped his
fingers on the steering wheel, waiting for the children to board.
“Good morning, good morning,” he said in a singsongy tone without taking
his eyes off the windshield. And he wished it to be a good morning indeed.
When the shuffling of feet stopped, he pulled the lever and watched
the door close.
Before rounding the corner into the road with the giant oak tree closest to
the road, he tapped the brakes and stopped.
Half rising, he pulled out a small bottle from his pants pocket and sprayed
his mouth with it. Next, he looked into the student mirror, plumed himself,
and pleased, sat back down and accelerated.
They reached the tree, and there, waiting, was a young lady.
This time he flung the door open and sprinted out the door.
Seconds later, with nostrils flared, he was back inside behind the wheel.
“Oooh, oooh, oooh!” The children cheered, though none of them knew
the young lady had just said yes to his marriage proposal.
So that when they arrived at school, the bus driver was at his zenith. And
when he turned to look at the children to say goodbye, they could
see that Mr. Zuniga had the happy face of a horse.
