Awdl Gywydd– Discover Welsh Rhyming #poetry #rhyming Easy as ABC

Easy As ABC

To know Kurt is to love him
Though to Kim, his heart belongs
Every day replete with awe
Help them pick a wedding song

Now that Kurt has wedded Kim
without him, I feel all wrong
The third wheel between those two
I have none to tag along

Need to get me a hobby
Need it be exciting too
Perhaps travel where I could
Without them, what should I do

Help me find a distraction
one that shan't include those two
make way, new sun arising
for me and surprise in tow

Got to find me a Don Juan
choose the one that makes me laugh
love me true with all his might
he will be my better half

When Kurt 'n Kim come calling
we'll be all in, Juan and me
for our friends, we can agree
in the morn, see them with glee

At the beginning of last week, a dear friend of mine on Medium introduced me to a poetry form I’ve never heard about before. I marveled at his ease of writing a new form, especially one with an ABC rhyme pattern.

I slept on it one night, and the next day this is the poetry that resulted. What you witnessed above is my first attempt at an Awdl Gywydd. Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t know what that is. I didn’t — would never have known if it wasn’t for Bob.

First off, it’s a Welsh four-line form, and here’s how to pronounce Awdl Gywydd “ow-dull gee-youth.”

As for the rules (presented to me by Writer’s Digest):

  • Four lines
  • Seven syllables per line
  • The final syllable of the first and third lines rhyme
with the third and fifth syllable of the following lines
  • The second and fourth lines rhyme.
  • (the A and C rhymes can slide a little)

XXXXXXA
XXAXXXB
XXXXXXC
XXXXCXB

It’s not easy, especially for me– challenged with rhyme when counting syllables. But I gave it a good try and enjoyed it. See what you think and please let me know in the comments.
