Spring: She’s Capricious, She’s Mercurial, She’s Here

Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king,
Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,
Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing:
      Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!*

The year's most pleasant queen is the sweet spring
heavily laden with moisture she sings
of gales, sunshowers, and hail shepherding
      —mercurial temperatures, cuckoo.

So by now, March takes care of the tending
the capricious queen walks in joy-waltzing
fed up with bleak weather, and frostbiting
please birds, do sing, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

As toes and ears long kept well-hidden spring
shiver at the sight of mares' tails and wings,
blue and yellow mackerel scales adding
telling tales of imminent storms that woe.

But Lady March's still wet behind earings
nor knows not when she better get moving
but she's thrilled to the edge of exploding
so she teases as she waits for her cue:

crocuses from mountain tops cascading
with kaleidoscopes of hues enticing
emblems of March, the dainty daffodils
dangle in place sans delay or ado.

And she sets the year's show enlivening
never mind how Winter opposes it
Queen March is here--the pretty birds do sing:
      Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

  4. Happy spring, Selma! Thank you for brightening my morning with two lovely spring poems. Yours is a delightfully-written peek into your springtime in experiences. Your reading of the poem by one of my favorite poets, Emily Dickinson, was perfection! ❤️🩵💙🩷 Have a beautiful weekend!

      Hey, Cheryl. Thanks friend.
Yes that was the first poem to go out at the start of the month. But…

So I’ve scheduled another for today. Perhaps March is waiting for a special invitation. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m sending her one through Emily. Let’s see if we get March to seal the deal.
Hope your internet woes are taken care of.
      Blessings.

On the edge of exploding–I hope so. We need some color and light. (K)
