Loveliest Of Trees, The Cherry Now

A Shropshire Lad  2:
Loveliest of trees, the cherry now

BY A. E. HOUSMAN

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands, I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

It has been a wet spring here in the Shonan area where I live. Yesterday, Friday, rain was compounded with strong winds. All morning long. But then come noon, we got a heavy showering of sunlight. Oh! How the cherry blossom reacted to the sun! They literally exploded. And like clockwork, my Line App was at par with the sun to alert me…

The Sakura Tree is indeed a beautiful tree, like all creation.
I hope you enjoyed reading A.E. Housman’s Poem I chose for you today.
A gorgeous Easter Sunday. Bless You.

The following haiku are written for

brief like a minute
mesmeric cherry blossoms
hold on to let go

the grandest story
cherry blossoms warm the day
melancholic awe

a pause in bliss
petalled in each cherry blossom
as life goes on

Happy Easter everyone.

Kigo: cherry blossoms

My son, who came to offer support over my recent loss enticed me outdoors. We
visited a nearby temple where we hoped to catch the trees in their spring attire.
I took many photos.

Two (or three) yearly activities typical of the season.

These photos are for your enjoyment. Sightings of Bride&Grooms to be, and their
entourages, usually bloom around this time. So do art enthusiasts and people of
all walks of life. As you can see, the trees are not in full bloom yet.

In April, which is when the new school year begins here, one could see parents and
students posing. Another wonderful feature of life in Japan.
Hope you enjoyed this short glimpse into my world. Blessings.

Beautiful! Free range cattle destroyed my old cherry tree, so I had no cherry blossoms this year. Split it right down the middle.

    1. Selma Martin

That’s so sad about your tree. But that’s something that cannot be controlled. In a street that used to be one of the less busier streets there grew a gorgeous Sakura tree–it was practically in the middle of the narrow street. But that street is nothing like it used to be. It’s a busy street. And that tree was causing accidents. Finally, last week the tree was cut down. I can just imagine how sad the men who cut that tree down felt… I didn’t see it, but I’m sure a monk must have come to give it its last rights–and I believe people are bowing to the memory of that tree now. I know I am.
BTW, if you care to know, I just managed to add those resized photos I promised on this post. Come when you can. Blessings.

Selma, your haiku were stunning! I wrote a haiku for you this week. Make sure to read my post. You’ll know which one. I love this time of year. Sakura is also trending on Threads. Add Sakura to your posts and when someone likes your post they get the cherry blossom emoji: 🌸

  15. Kerfe

Brief like a minute–so true–but the ephemeral nature is part of their beauty I think.

    1. Selma Martin

Well said, K. Thanks. BTW, And if you care to know, I just managed to add those resized photos I promised. I take them with my iphone and they’re always so huge that WP refuses them. So then I need to resize. It’s such a hassle. Wish I knew a work around. Anywhere, the photos are here if you’d like to see them. xo

  16. Suzette Benjamin

Thank you, Selma, for adding the excellent photos. A peaceful setting with the blossoms adding to the stillness. The last photo of the couple walking near the beautiful tree is a .marvelous capture.
