An Open Letter To My Rebloggers: Please Reblog This One

Long Live Creativity

Dear Rebloggers, I love you. Of all things in the bloggersphere, what I want more than anything is for more people to read my words that many times take me an entire day to string together.

Dear Rebloggers, it’s doubly rewarding when you see something in the words I choose to share with the world and then decide to interact with me and my work through comments. That just lights me up like a Christmas tree.

Aww, yes, Rebloggers, I love it when you share my posts and welcome reblogging of my published posts using the precious reblog feature. BUT, would it be too much to ask that you please give me a heads up.

Why?

Because I’m old school.

Because I want to know your thoughts about what inspired you to want to share my hard-to-come words with your audience.

Because not doing so is disrespectful to the trade of writing.

Share my original posts at your heart’s content on social media, but if you wish to reblog my content on your lovely website, please ask if it’s ok. I will say yes, then mosey over to your website to find out why you decided to reblog that particular post: You will have a write-up about why– right? You better, otherwise, I might feel that you’re stealing MY hard work without contributing anything of your own. Good. Thanks.

And if you’re so busy that you forget to ask (blogging is hard work/time-consuming), put a pingback to alert me of where this blessing is coming from. I will then visit your site to check you out and thank you. At some point in the future, I might do the same for you if/when I’m inspired by something you create.

We’re a polite bunch of people— we, bloggers are. And disrespecting this human courtesy sends alarm bells in my head. Honest people don’t plagiarize! People who are creative respect creativity— they have an unspoken communion with that place that gives rise to words.

I love you, rebloggers, and want to have pure reasons to do the same for you.

Here’s a rule-of-thumb I adhere to:

Always quote the source you are sharing— give the original blogger credits for their work. Put their words in quotes!

This is not only common sense but the right thing to do.

Let’s keep this aspect of our lives hassle-free, backed by mutual respect and a firm belief in the value of our words.

Thank you and in case you missed WordPress’s thoughts on reblogging, let me remind:

  • When a post is reblogged, it shows up with a *link back* to the blog it came from,
  • the reblogger’s commentary highlighted, and
  • an excerpt of the post’s text and media
  • It also shows any comments left by the person who reblogged the post:
  • The owner of the original work will receive a * pingback * from THAT reblogger in THAT post’s comments — AND SO IT SHOULD BE!
SKIP ANY OF THESE COURTESIES AND YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!
You can also click the Share button from the Reader. This will open the post
editor on your site so you can make changes TO YOUR OWN WORDS before
publishing!
The post you’re sharing will receive a pingback
from a link back to the original site.

Long Live The Muse!

This is only common courtesy and surely not too much to ask! If I had the ‘reblog’ function, I would reblog this! 🤣

    1. Selma Martin

Ingrid, I’m sending this one out into blog-sphere in hopes that the young enthusiastic person I mentioned to you before might read. (He is daring and has become ravenous). That’s my target. He may reblog this one. It’s full of pertinent information he could use. I want to think he is not in the know.
Anyway. Thanks for engaging with me. I appreciate you. Blessings.

  2. Annika Perry

Selma, I concur with everything here and this year particularly I’ve been reblogged by sites that I’ve never heard of, without notification and no real credit to the myself. I wondered if I was being a bit fussy but good to know others feel the same!

    1. Selma Martin

      Some people!
I’m so sorry it’s happening to you too, Annika. This is not flattering! I bled those words; we bleed those words and they don’t even have the courtesy of reblogging the right way. There is a right way, you know.
Like you I’ve never had an interaction with this persistent individual. Well, the first time I noticed it. I approached and demanded he reword.

The website is populated exclusively with other people’s posts. Many! Nothing explains why the reblog AND at the onset it says BY (his name)
      Wrong.
Well, hope he learns something from this post.
Thanks for adding to this. I hope your rebloggers fall on this one as well.
Again, thanks. Have a glorious day. Good night from me. (Past my bedtime.) 😴 🛌

Reblogs are mostly done by new blogger, to ‘flatter’ you. Most people don’t even read the blog post, they just click ‘like’ to get it over with. The statistics gives it away. as for asking to be reblogged, that was a first. 🙂

    1. Selma Martin

Thanks for sharing what you know. I appreciate it.
That request to reblog is mostly for THAT reblogger. Wish to inform him how to do it right.
      Thanks for the visit. xo

  4. dorahak

How did you realize they were doing this, Selma, if you don’t even get a ping back to alert you? Hope this post gets lots of reblogging notice: it’s kinder than a legal one, though both would be well-deserved.

I want to give HIM the chance to make it right. Perhaps he just doesn’t know. He is who I want to see this post.
      >> to your question: Don’t get a pingback. Don’t get a comment.
He left me a LIKE: I usually go down my list of LIKES — visit each site to read and LIKE if I like something in earnest.
(Good thing my list is still short)
It was there I saw titles of posts I had read previously. Intrigued I scrolled down, down, down (he posts very often) and then saw my own post there. (Thus the LIKE, I thought, but knew this was not the right way to do it). It was worded as BY HIM! I confronted him immediately about that wording.
He puts a link. But don’t know how he works that without creating a proper pingback that alerts that he has reblogged.
In which case he IS STEALING.

I don’t have high hopes for the behavior of such people, Selma, but you’re spot on with this post.

    1. Selma Martin

Thanks for reading, David. And for the comment. 😉

  6. Jeff Flesch

Agree with everyone. I have several people that reblog my posts, and I’ve become accustomed to it; yet I do think that a heads up is common courtesy. Great post, Selma.

    1. Selma Martin

But you get a ping back, right? I’m sure your people know to do it the right way.

People can’t just rePOST under the guise that they’re doing you a favor.

I want more people to engage with me through my posts— commenting is king. Etiquette matters.

Glad you have a good understanding with your rebloggers already.
I want mutual respect from mine.
Thanks, Jeff. Be well and keep rocking, Sir. 💃🏼 🎸 🎤 🕺 👏 Here’s looking at you.

      1. Jeff Flesch

Yes, I always get a ping back. Understood about the mutual respect. Important. I hope that happens soon, Selma. Have a wonderful week, my friend.

  7. Daphny Aqua

I’m with you on this Selma, one should always ask first before re-blogging someone’s work.

    1. Selma Martin

Thanks. Glad you see the importance of that, Daphny. A ping back would be great. He has become more audacious…
I hate to put “all rights reserved” on my excerpts. But I’m doing it to disuade him from taking. Hopefully.
Hope he gets to read to learn from this post. He probably doesn’t know about etiquette. I wish him well.
      Stay lovely.

      1. Daphny Aqua

Is this the same guy you talked about last time Selma?

        1. Selma Martin

Yes, Daphny, the very same. I hope he’s the only one. Thanks for caring. Stay sweet.

          1. Daphny Aqua

Hope he learn it by now.
            Stay well Selma ❣️

  8. SamSahana

Now, those are some powerful words. Consent is very important and you deserve to know why your work is being shared and with all due credits. I hope everyone learns…

Thanks for stopping. Comments mean the world to me. Won't you please leave one?
