Poem about two cheeky snakes that stopped me in my tracks
At half-past eight this morning
resplendent shone the day
I waddled out to assess the yard
from storms that had curtained the sun
It was right then that I saw them
first one — then there were two
slithering behind the other
frozen, I stood on the spot
He walked ahead full throttle
she paused to show me her tongue
Grimacing, retreating, choking
my voice dried inside my throat.
Were they coming or were they going
I could not know for sure
would I see them again at lunchtime
or had they been sheltering from the storm?
…
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, about 25 typhoons occur between July and October. And in the past thirty years, 11 make landfall a year.
These typhoons are given numbers instead of names.
This weekend we braced ourselves; cleared our yards for #14, heading straight for us but changed course last minute. It left behind lots of rain.
Today, we saw the sun. And in my yard, I saw two snakes taking a shortcut through my yard. Oh my!
How do you feel about snakes? I’m not a fan, they scare the daylights out of me, but I let them be. I hope these two find a home somewhere else. Right?

I live in a built-up city, and we seldom see snakes around. We still do, but not as much! I would run far away if I encounter any of them though. They are probably afraid of us in an urban environment such as ours, and I think creatures that are afraid lash out when threatened. Fight or flight, right? I could be wrong, but better to be safe than sorry.

Hey, Ming. You’re the sweetest. How are your studies? Too busy for Medium? I miss you. I see what you say about those reptiles… The storm brought us chilly weather as well. I didn’t expect to see those snakes out in my yard. Speaking of storms, didn’t you guys get the tail end of it? You guys, okay? I hope so. Be well, dear one. Keep shining. I wish you Miracles.
Oh my! Not sure what I would do if I saw snakes in my yard. I sure got a scare this summer when I nearly stepped on a bull snake by the canal while out on a summer walk with the family. Then on my a Birthday a small baby snake slithered in front of Abel’s path while we walked our dog at the creek. No more outdoor adventures near water for us this summer.
Abel really does not like snakes after following one’s path through the banana plantation in Honduras. He was a young boy, thank goodness he was holding the hand of his father as they reached an old tree and found a dead hurled up python with what looked like the head of a goat with small type horns perturbing from his head.
Jeez, Monico. You have stories to tell… almost stepped on a bullsnake? Those are huge I understand. Venomous or not I don’t want to meet one that size. My couple were around 2 ft and I got the daylights sapped out of me.
Yesterday when I was looking for an image to add to my post, I diligently looked for snakes. I couldn’t go through the list. Then that one with the little rubbery-gymnast wearing snake skin came on and I was relieved. Perhaps it worked.
… and what? That snake Abel saw died eating? WTH! Eating a what? Jeez!
