For #TankaTuesday Weekly #Poetry Challenge No. 328, 7/11/23, where we’re
exploring Sun, Sand & Sea with the main photo provided by photographer
Terri Webster Schrandt, from secondwindleisure.com.
Terri says: “This photo is a filtered version of a lifeguard station and red patrol
vehicle at Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA.”
Colleen says: “🖋️ Your poetry writing inspiration for this week is to use the photo
as your inspiration, but I want you to concentrate on imagery. Extra points if you
can work this phrase into your poem: “Sun, Sand, & Sea.”
Remember, if you write a freestyle poem, please add a syllabic poem to go with it.
What is imagery?
The Poetry Foundation defines imagery as:
“Elements of a poem that invoke any of the five senses to
Poetry Foundation.org
create a set of mental images. Specifically, using vivid or
figurative language to represent ideas, objects, or actions.”
Imagery isn’t focused on only visual impressions or mental images—it also includes
our sensory experiences, including internal emotions and physical sensations.
When we write poetry, we need to engage and use all of our senses. Visual images
often appear in our minds and are the easiest to add to your poem. But what do
you hear, smell, taste, or feel?
Far out in the fields,
blown in with the humid wind
sun, sand, and sea
*
The Voice of July
how I remember its tone:
sun, sand, and sea
*
Every summer day
sun, sand, blue sky, and the sea
how the heat lingers
*
The sky in summer
one star unable to sleep
the sun, sand, and sea
*
Sun, sand, and sea
all things in my view
are haiku

At #tankatuesday, she feels like a hummingbird
gladly returning to her favorite flower.

Loved reading through the haiku. It was sort of like a revolving door where everything gets refracted and revisited, if that makes sense! Really nice, Selma!
