Early Bird Prompt: NaPoWriMo 2024

First draft:

The Ocean

she never fails to shake me
when I see her all riled up

her grandeur is attractive
to whoever walks about

she is pert and erratic
only fools contest her ways

just when you’re set to quit her
a trout she hurls you: odd: aye

It’s so close to the start of Na/GloPoWriMo that we can practically read the poems already! Okay, maybe not exactly that, but we’re certainly starting to feel the bubbling sensation that portends imminent inspiration.

We’ll be back tomorrow with our first daily featured participant and resource, along with a prompt. But for now, and to help out all of you for whom April 1 comes a bit earlier than it does to Na/GloPoWriMo’s secret headquarters (yes, our lair is built into a volcano), here’s an early-bird prompt: Pick a word from the list below. Then write a poem titled either “A [your word]” or “The [your word]” in which you explore the meaning of the
word, or some memory you have of it, as if you were writing an illustrative/alternative definition.

  • Cage
  • Ocean
  • Time
  • Cedar
  • Window
  • Sword
  • Flute

Happy Writing!

Maureen’s prompts bring out some fun stuff, indeed. This time around, in my fourth year, I will try to write shorter poems. This was the first–I hope to continue this way. So happy to see you here. Thanks for the support. I bless you madam famous Author. You rock, ma’am.

      1. Smitha V

I think that’s an amazing idea- to write short poems. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, too and I want to read more poems by other poets. I hope I can do it.
Thank you, Selma, for your blessings, kind words and cheering me. Lol…I wish was a famous author or atleast someone whose book lots of people read and enjoyed. Don’t we all. Loads of hugs to you.
