Buried Under Emails From Ghosts With No Verdance of Decency

The number of emails I was receiving from what seemed as coming from a reputable
source was enormous. I was suspecting I’d been hacked; ignoring them, hoping they’d
just give up on me as a prospective sucker to their fraud seemed my best bet. And I did
keep it up until I could no longer.

My friends, I still cannot be sure of the reason for so many emails demanding I do
something fast or risk losing everything. WTH?

Those emails must have originated from a source fully in the know of the goings-on at
Google, as the giant is, indeed, introducing new measures that will go into effect in
June 2023.

(check the web if you want to know more about those
measures and how they apply; though, not for Gmail as
far as I can tell– if you find something about Gmail,
please give me the heads up. Thanks).

What got me biting my nails is that every time I opened a draft email I got a pop-up for
suggestions on how to make my email more marketable. And that pop-up lingered with
no way of going forward (no X to make it disappear) but for the two buttons which more
or less said Show me How.

This is no way to live! Those options were not options.

What I did was simple. I went to my Gmail settings and disabled every tick mark for
every smart and dynamic feature.

I do not remember ever ticking/opting for the smarts and dynamic options, but there
they were, enabled! I have disabled them and the pesky emails are no more, and I can
now access my drafts without annoying pop-ups.

My fellow writers, I’m the last person to give advice on technology, but that’s what I
did to restore my peace of mind from those ghosts that lack the verdancy of a decent
life. Shame on them!

I thank everyone who read and responded to my urgent request for help, even if you
were as clueless as me. Knowing I was in good company gave me the boost I needed.

It might not be the last we’ll see of this, nor does this put a dent in the wrongdoings
of that sickness, but I hope that by staying alert we can ward away that kind of filth
from hurting us and the things we hold dear.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude for your presence and compassion in this, my
tech-related hour of need.

This is not the end of all the tech things that need my attention. Oh, no. That is not all…

  • My post images are not showing on TheTwitter!
  • Horde, my newsletter webmail provider is telling me about an expiration–
    like, yesterday!
(dilemma: which should I tackle first? Thing one, or Thing two?)
  • Jetpack sent me an urgent email telling me I broke something!
(well, I probably did but that was only because I followed their site health
suggestion to delete certain inactive plugins– WTH?)
  • Bluehost told me to ignore that urgent email from Jetpack…

… and I’m feeling the need to learn a lesson in philosophy– like little characters Sally
and Sam in the children’s story, The Cat In The Hat by Dr. Seuss.

At the end of that long ordeal with the eccentric cat, the narrator asks the reader a
great question, “What would YOU do if your mother asked YOU?”

>> I’ve told YOU, so I’ve probably learned that philosophy lesson <<

Phew! Now I want to turn things around and ask those ghosts without verdancy of
decency: “What would YOU do if your mother asked YOU?”

Wow! That’s all I can say! Sorry, I’m not very tech savvy, so I can’t add anything, but I did learn a few things! <3

    1. Selma Martin

DAP, bless you. It was frustrating. But I hope it’s over. Glad you were able to learn something from someone who is NOT savvy. Let’s all help each other. And stay alert. Xo

    1. Selma Martin

Bah humbug! Goff, the paradox of our times. I hope it’s a permanent solution. Let’s stay on the safe side. We’re already living the wild life by exposing our souls to the world in our poetry, safety is what we need now. Thanks soooo much for joining the conversation my friend. I bless you always. Xoxo

Glad you have the situation under control, Selma! Wish these scammers and hackers would find something more positive to do with their lives than prey on others!

It’s a mad, mad, world online! Glad you were able to sort through some of it. And Dr. Seuss is always the voice of reason! 😆

    1. Selma Martin

Dr. Seuss. A genius. The world is mad, mad — no denying. Hope every dark soul finds their positive eureka moment.
Thanks for being here, dear Tricia. Bless you. (Keep going)

Some of those emails look so real! It’s very hard to tell the difference. If I’m uncertain I always contact the “source” directly. And if I can’t, I ignore it, because if it was that important there would be another way for me to get in touch. But tech is a continual mystery to me as well. (K)

Technology can suck us dry! So sorry you have todo battle with these sites. Thanks for the heads up!

    1. Selma Martin

Suck the morrow out of us indeed. I fought them this time and well, the results were on my favor. I don’t want it to happen again. Not to anyone I know and hold dear. Not even to my enemies. Let’s stay in the light. Xoxo thanks for reading and commenting, Barbara. Blessings.

Impressed?! You are the sweetest! Yeah, I hope I did enough… thanks so much for the moral support. I bless you, lady. Let’s all be careful. ((Hugs))

      1. Cindy Georgakas

The fact you got it figured out is a feather in you cap… it would be in mine. Yes, careful in our unknown territory is a good idea❣️

I’m glad you managed to sort this technical nightmare out, Selma. We never really know who has access to our various accounts and websites. There are some sick people in this world, just trying to cause trouble or mischief for others. I often wonder about my blog. I put my heart and soul out there in my writing or poetry, not truly knowing who is reading it but trusting that WordPress, in general, is a ‘nice’ reliable place to explore my feelings and thoughts. I, too, got an email from Jetpack, although I didn’t, thankfully, end up with the problems you have had with your emails. I’m so glad you’ve got the issue sorted now. You can’t be too careful these days.

Your post reminded me of when I was scammed by one of those phone scammers, stating they were my bank and that I needed to move money into a ‘safe’ account. This was before there was much knowledge about online or phone scams. The bank were most unhelpful, and it took me two years to get my money back via the Ombudsman. I won’t be caught out like that again in a hurry! It’s a bit of a sad world when you have to be careful not to get caught out by a criminal or fraudster (much the same thing, I feel.) If our instincts tell you to listen to them, it’s best that we do. I’ll be sure to know for next time. (Sorry for the slight detour) Xx 🌹💖

    1. Selma Martin

You got scammed like that?! 😱 😱
I’m soooo sorry to know. Be careful please. Please.
Let’s all be careful. Blessing on your weekend. And always, Ellie. Sending my Angel 👼 to watch over you. Xo 😘

      1. Ellie Thompson

Thank you so much for your kindness, Selma. It’s a bit of a sad world when we can’t trust people and that there are these scammers about these days. Thank you for your blessings, my friend. They’re much appreciated. Xx 💖🌷🥰

I’m glad you solved the issue Selma, but I imagine not without pulling a few hairs out as well! Sheesh! These tech issues are enough to make our heads spin. “Thing one and thing two” made me laugh. Humor always diffuses the problem, even if for only a few minutes. 🙂 Sending hugs for a great week ahead, minus any technological difficulties. 🌻💐🥰💞

    1. Selma Martin

Lost some sleep over this. Thanks for reading and offering support. Glad something made you smile… Be safe and may the words flow… I bless you
