Nostalgia

-bought the requisite apples: nothing else smells like Christmas
-started piercing cloves into an orange: a traditional decoration
-Christmas carols play on repeat: Jim Reeves
-on my table, a pile of Christmas cards & festive stamps: pouring my heart into
each handwritten card to send to family, old friends & pen pals.

But this year, I’m not decorating the old tree. Instead, I will hang a wall-tree
made of yarn, to which I’ll add Christmas lights & old decorations. But after I
send out the cards.

Here’s a poem to recount the few items that silhouette this year’s festivities.
Especially the part about apples.

A poem on what we did with apples at Christmastime.

In the 1960s and 1970s, I never had the privilege of biting into a crunchy apple. As it says in the poem, our apples smelled delicious but were overripe.

Homemakers bought, served to children, and used them as Christmas decorations
that finally got served to the fattened pigs. Make what you will of that, but not
having apples felt like missing out.

Today, thanks to the cold treatment protocol regulation, every child in Belize knows
the real taste of apples — this makes me happy.

Still, I associate apples with Christmas and will forever hold that fruit of the gods in high esteem, especially at year’s end.

What about you? Is there anything you hold dear as a childhood memory? Let me
know in the comments, please.

Thanks for reading.
