Legend: This Is How Dog Got Its Name #Day24 #NaPoWriMo

There's a legend I gathered in childhood
When as a choir girl, I’d stay
Keen to hear the older girls conversing
Long after practice was done for the day

Though they told it not to me
To my ears, it was intriguing
The story that God created all creatures
Making each unique, appealing

They said God traveled the planet
Promptly the animals ‘round Him came
And one by one dismissed them affably
After giving each creature a name

That after hours and days of this service
Only the last of them all remained
And to that one, the best of companions
God reversed it and gave Dog His name

The Prompt for day 24 is as follows:

Today's (optional) prompt is a fun one. Find a factual article about an
animal. A Wikipedia article or something from National Geographic would do
nicely – just make sure it repeats the name of the animal a lot. Now, go back
through the text and replace the name of the animal with something else – it
could be something very abstract, like "sadness or "my heart," or something
more concrete, like "the streetlight outside my window that won't stop
blinking." You should wind up with some very funny and even touching
combinations, which you can then rearrange and edit into a poem.

I spent a busy, lovely Saturday under the sun today and had no time to look up articles, so I did not go with the prompt today. In keeping on the animals’ theme, I offer you a sweet story I heard as a child.

Have you ever heard the legend before? If you hadn’t I hope you enjoyed knowing this now. *wink* This one is a shoutout to all my friends with furry friends, especially those who favor dogs. I celebrate you today.

I like how you used a childhood story to tell a poem and what a sweet story of how a dog got to be called a dog. Thanks Selma for sharing this.
