Basking On The Memory Of Our First Snowfall Last Year

Happy 2023 to all, and may we all keep the flame of hope, gratitude, awe, and optimism
alive throughout the year. I bless you.

It hasn’t snowed in my area this year yet. And so I dug into last year’s photos when we
got our first icing of the year on the last day of Christmas, Epiphany. From the Three
Kings, yup– all 6 centimeters in one evening!

I enjoyed the change of scenery, and on my way back from a visit to my son (I have two
sons and one lovely daughter-in-law *wink*), I took a couple of pics to show you. Hope
you enjoy them until I can show you the first ones I’m yet to take this year.

But first, a poem for you. I chose a Classic Nonet — no rhyming in this form, minimal
punctuation and the nine lines have a syllabic count from 9–1.

Light Spills Over

my daughter called, so I’m on my way
the work today will have to wait
we’ll grind the beans, steam soymilk
sit, guffaw, sip and growl
meanwhile outside the
light spills over
as the world
turns white
snowed

As tends to happen in our parts, the snow disappears by morning, but not last year. I
broke a fingernail in the excitement (excitement as we hadn’t seen snow in four years),
giving rise to another poem. Please read on.

A wonderful white morning covered in snow
Author’s Album, January 7th, 2022

Warmth, It’s Crazy, I Know

The nail that broke, I don’t lament
it will grow back in due course
the scattering of the white charm
that’d been lacking for four years
came just when my nails need curbing

Smiles full of teeth I would have seen
weren’t it for the face masks worn
I know b’cause — it’s crazy, I know —
behind my mask shone teeth
like horses’ in arrant arousal

That one snow day could lighten us
not I nor they saw it coming
my neighbors’ zeal to shovel snow —
no small feat, no sir! Warmth… Priceless…

This one resulted from the snow that lingered past the first day. Besides the
camaraderie with my neighbors, I got to give birth to a couple of poems that
now nestle in my happy place. Hope you enjoy these two.

For this year, I’ve written a couple of snow-warm tankas, which you can find on
the blog page.

Lovely photos. We get snow so rarely that each event becomes marked in our life’s timeline. Like the year my son turned 5. He wished for snow on his birthday, December 22. Like a thoughtful Mom, I tried to remind him that we don’t have a lot of snow here. But wouldn’t you know, a miracle! He woke with squeals of delight. “Look Mommy. I told you it would snow on my birthday!”

Never doubt the wishes of a child…or miracles.

A lovely post with beautiful poetry, Selma. The photos of your snowfall there are stunning. I love the one with the snow on the greenery – it reminds me of lots of tiny snow-covered Christmas trees. I think the first snowfall of the year is always magical. We had snow a couple of weeks ago; it started to melt, and then the melted snow froze into thick ice, which made it too dangerous for me to go out in my wheelchair. It’s cold here at the moment (again), and I woke up to solid ice puddles and a thick frost on the grass. It did look pretty, though. Xx 🌼💕

Missed responding to this lovely comment. Forgive please.
Snow. There was hope for it and we got teased with flurries but nothing stayed. And this late in March is unlikely it’ll snow. So memories is all I have.
Thanks for reading. Blesssings on your new week Ellie. XoXo
