Dad chose the safest landscapes
Scoured the sanest grounds
Set out in secure adventures
His boy, Dad cloaked in warmth
He let Boy explore and push barriers,
After noticing his gentle touch
Shadowed him with loving eyes
Helped him build bridges, robust
But one day, years older,
Dad found the world in arrears
A cacophony of stubborn viewpoints
And Dad’s ominous concern rose forth
The world we’ve made,
Is the world we failed, Dad worried
A father can’t afford to stay hushed
He gathered strength, come from above
And a prayer for all sons, he sent up
I want you to be men of good hearts
Braver than me, your cares to the wind
To never lose your gentle touch,
Let curiosity and inclusive spirit
Your moral compass always be
To never do harm to yourselves or others
To never pass judgment on other folks
Be men of beliefs, open to learning
Guided by faith, and the miracle of living
Holding firm to great hope in his old heart
Confident was he in all sons’ moral scope
And no youngster anywhere went astray
And bad sons — there exist none
