Haiku invitation
This week’s haiku invitation is to write a haiku or senryu referencing winter
solitude or winter isolation.
Share your haiku in the comments below, or post on your own page and link
back to this post. I can’t wait to read what you write!
snow falls steadily over the loosened soil I refill my cup Alluding to being alone because if the narrator had company, they’d refill each other’s sake cups (like we do here in Japan). * chinook wind and rain pound the maple tree bare my footpath teems over We got gusts of warm air interfere with our pleasantly chilly days that finally turned my maple tree spectacular—and then we got a good downpour. The tree went bare overnight and the ground got flooded in a gorgeous splash of color. *
A SONNET The well-nigh noon sun, brimful on my back Vies for regard against dark, blue-gray sky Wind tousles my hair, cartwheels on the walk Lilts golden leaves, whispers to them a rhyme Flaming on sidewalk, gold & reds necks crane Rising to the blue--high they levitate In their cavalcade, gusts of sticky rain Soon dispeople streets, beg them not be late Swiftly as they rose, leaves come tumbling down Gray sky turns azure, dazzling orange sun. Surfing mountain peaks--Papagayo clown? Or Chinook winds with mercurial horn? Flowing through stern-wild then turning gentle-- Oriental clime. Is it coincidental? © 2023 selma

And then I had the sense to create a reel for Instagram. Added all three poems for your
enjoyment. One image inadvertently “paid for” on Canva–900 yen for the moving
image of the maple tree practically broke my wallet–but it made one creator happy
and so I invite you to admire it too.
(there are plenty of free images on Canva, I need
to be more careful/less hasty)
Thanks for reading.
May your days be merry and bright…

Hi Selma, I really like your first haiku! And then I liked it even more when I read your commentary. Wonderful!
I’m so pleased to know this, dear Mark. So happy the commentary worked. Some subtleties are hard to make sense. I thought this was one time when I needed to point that out.
Bless you. Happy Holidays. Xoxo

Nicely written. The ground couldn’t have been covered with colours in a way that was any better.
Right?! I think so too. The ground was flooded. 👏🏽
