Think of Your Greatness, Know You Matter #Ekphrastic #TankaTuesday

It’s the third week of the month, and at Colleen M. Chesebro’s Word Craft: Prose and
Poetry, they’re working on an Ekphrastic #PhotoPrompt in which I wish to participate.

This challenge explores Ekphrastic writing inspired by visual art (photographs). Thank you, Kerfe Roig, for providing a piece of your art for this month’s challenge. Here’s my contribution.

YOU MATTER

for
when winds
start to blow
dreams run afoul
and answers resound
more like questions so strange
as is life 'n complex'ties
where sometimes some things don't make sense--
take mighty mountains, brightest of stars
take me or take earthworms, eggplants, or slugs
all protons, neutrons, electrons like you
so when the questions and their answers
or resistance and rejection
turn your head in confusion
make you scream, "unfairness"
think of your greatness
Why-- you matter!
you're the wind
with heart
soar

I worked diligently to bring forth a double etheree from the ekphrastic photo
prompt that I hadn’t attempted before. This Ekphrastic poetry that explores art
is a new concept for me, and I thank Colleen for the introduction.


The Etheree poem consists of ten lines of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10
syllables. An Etheree can also be reversed, in which case it is
known as a Double Etheree.

    Nice optimism in this poem. I liked the “earthworms, eggplants or slugs.” It seemed such a random list, but they all have the components you listed. 🙂

    Selma, this was a fabulous double Etheree. I’m thrilled you found Kerfe’s artwork inspiring to give this technique a try. I like looking at images painted hundreds of years ago and imagining what they are thinking. It really gets the creative juices flowing. Thanks so much. <3

      I saw you updated the cheat sheet; added Chōka. It edges on short as well. I’ll attempt it one of these fine days.
