The Imposter—What do you see # 238- May 13, 2024

Written for Sadje of the Keep It Alive Website

I Will Go With The Imposter

When he comes uninvited and hungry
assuredly and as endorsed as God
to take me away from the life I know—
like the black snake rubbing against the bark,
I will take off my old life and follow.
Will not argue, nor implore for more time
but will lap up my allowance of air—
feel my chest swell for the very last time
with ribbons of flame and holding one wild
lily, trail after him to spring azures.
In the distance you will hear the owl cry
the air will smell like the bodies of plants;
when the ribbon bristles and floats away
you will remember and call out my name
and I, barefoot and half-dressed, will depart
with the imposter on to the glazed light.
