The Fiend of Our Times

Tight-toothed fiend, gives rise to grief
And switches not, ever its riff
I wish that I could squash its dream
And replace it with new motif
Or at best, its wickedness wean
Gives rise to grief, tight-toothed fiend

I’d give it wings, just like a bee
And show it Spring to set it free,
The way of kings—millions of things
Or like a sparrow to some degree
Fill its heartstrings with magic things
Just like a bee, I’d give it wings

Note: the fiend of our times is depression that’s engrieving our young generation—on a steady rise worldwide. Wouldn’t it be something if we could abolish it once and for all? In this piece I imagine myself changing its trajectory by giving it wings—of a bee or a sparrow—and thus showing that fiend a new way of bee-ing. A new purpose. I hope you enjoyed my first Sparrowlet poem.

p.s. sometimes that black stuckness is a pause on the crossroads and more helpful than a manic rush around which the young with their iPhones are addicted to
