The Clerihew That Wanted To Be A Sonnet #sonnet

The man endearingly known as The Bard
Notorious was he for reeking of lard
Snatched words to repurpose any fine day
When no one could devise something to say

By night his list would swerve & get longer
His stomach gripes would only grow stronger
Liasoned he’d string words with grandeur
Metering so none would go asunder

He devised poetry known as sonnets
A hard tackle if thou lacketh phonics
Still, wordsmiths echo meter & rhyming—
Swap you for "thou," sayeth & bringeth-ing

So, lambkins, sweet chucks, mine word-hoarding czars
Despair not if thine lines don’t bedazzle
The fault is never only in the stars
Don’t kick up a fuss, deem it a hassle

Catch the fever the larder’s now bygone
Fawn the pen, honor the bard with thine brawn

Well, for starters, the rhyme scheme is ‘imperfect’ for the Shakespearean Sonnet
that this little Clerihew aspired ToBe. *wink* And since one cannot disengage
entirely from one’s roots, this Clerihew followed the AABB scheme typical of any
good four-lined Clerihew.

As I sit back to look at what happened to me here, I see the lesson: practice makes perfect!

(well, you know what I mean, this is far from perfect. I am that Clerihew. Phew!)

The line length and meter are of sonnets and look at that, at the sestet– voilá, it
showed some brawn.

So who’s to blame this Clerihew for trying?

(…and so we grow).

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than
unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve
the problems of the human race.” ~ Calvin Coolidge

Hope this post brings you the same encouragement that revealed itself to me in hindsight. I share it because I find it a worthy life lesson.

This was lots of fun to read Selma 😊

Oh, to hear you say that, Ingrid. Thanks. I played with a serious form but not intentionally. But the words were unwieldy— didn’t want to move to a better line. Then upon evaluation realized what they were. Haha.
Love it when the words are the masters as they are in most cases.
“Thine brawn” was right? I struggled with that thine.
So thrilled you read. Thanks for the support.

Letting the words be master is often the best way 😊

Oh, what a cuuute charming poem! 💖 Whimsical is the word. 😁 Loved it (when didn’t I “love” your poetry? 😉). Wonderful as always.

Wonderful that you thought so, my sweets. I’m so glad you read this one too. Appreciate your support. 👏

jolly good fun, eh? actually, it IS a fun piece to read (bet it was harder to write though 😂 ) — but it does prove the point: it’s grit and determination and a willingness to spend some time learning and working at it; of course it’s not always gonna be “perfect” – but it’s a process – and wow, didn’t you take away some really valuable insights about different poetic forms? Sometimes, we have to say, “yup, it was harder than it looked” – but that’s not a deterrent! So, as long as you had fun too, while sweating it out? Then we cheer “go you!” 🙂

Aww thanks. You’re the greatest cheerleader of all. I had a jolly great time working on it —though the stubborn lines didn’t want to yield.
So then I had to stand back and work with what I had.
Worked for me. And in a weird way it was the perfect-est poem I wrote that day. Yay.
May the force be with you always, WiseChild (I’m conferring you with that name, because I like it on you. Hope you don’t mind)
Don’t forget Lady Luna tonight. Let her bathe you. Good night to you. IWYM

The moon was delightful these past few nights – peeking out from behind towering pine branches, as if snugged up within them, splashing her glow all about the conifers and now (mostly) leafless trees – and the silence! Sweeping luxury. (I live in the middle of nowhere – all hills and mountains – “cottage country” – so it’s pretty quiet – and definitely no light pollution!

Don’t mind the “new moniker” – it’s fine with me and if it makes you happy? 😉

Sometimes when we push the creative process, it pushes back Harder – 😂 – so either we work with it, or around it, but I guess the trick, the most valuable lesson, as you’ve come to see, is accepting what is – right in the moment. Who knows, in 3 months time, you might be able to re-work it – but of course, it will change then, because the initial moment has passed – and who we are each time we sit down to write is just a bit different than before. And it’s all good, a learning process – so, yup, we continue crafting; and as long as you’re willing and enjoying it (mostly – 😂😌 ) then that’s all that matters; it means you get to live another day, so to speak.

Hope you’re having a great day/afternoon etc. – since it’ late morning here – be well and safe and brightest of blessings, moon and other wise 🙂

Thanks for stopping. Comments mean the world to me. Won't you please leave one?
