Written after Colleen’s invitation:
- Your syllabic poetry writing invitation is to choose a kigo word or phrase from the
seasonal kigo list on the post below. You can select from the summer category for
the Northern Hemisphere, or the winter categoryfor the Southern Hemisphere on
the 500 kigo word list. Share your kigo word on your post. If you write freestyle
poetry, you must share a syllabic form, that includes a kigo word. - You must use one kigo word or phrase in your syllabic poem. If you share a kigo
word or phrase in your freestyle poem, you must include a kigo word or phrase in
your syllabic poem. - You DO NOT have to write a haiku. You can create a poem from the 24 forms listed.
(We all know only haiku and haibun require kigo season words). This challenge uses
the kigo words for inspiration.

My contribution— Tanka, Haiku, Abhanga; Haiku:
Fragrant afternoon
with only sun on my mind
I walk for long hours
pause only for drunken bees
stumbling out of the flowers
*
Carp banners flapping
their lure not lost on children
Poppy heads stand strong
*
Warm sun in the day time
noble blues afternoon
at night sliver of moon
calm fragrant night

After Colleen’s haiku:
cured sakura leaves
a salty, sweet confection
spring inside your mouth

wrapped as a present
tasty sakura mochi
all that stays of spring

Kigo: fragrant afternoon, fragrant nights, drunken bees of spring,
carp banners, poppies, sakura mochi

Your poem makes me want summer to hurry and get here!
Hi Selma, these are lovely summery verses.
Lovely!
“Fragrant afternoon”–those are always worth spending time inside! (K)
While some mark the beginning of summer with the solstice others belive that same day is already midsummer…
Enjoying each day is a gift.
I saw a yellow swallowtail butterfly this morning. Made my day 🙂 …so even getting stung by burn hazel… I am still happy.
What a lovely afternoon you describe in your tanka & haiku! I like seeing the carp banners and would like to taste sakura mochi 😀
