The nail that broke I don’t lament
it will grow back eventually
the scattering of the white beauty
that had been lacking for four years
came just when my nails needed curbing
Smiles full of teeth I would have seen
if it wasn’t for the face masks we wore
I know because it’s crazy I know,
behind mine shone teeth like horses’
in arrant sexual arousal
That one snow-day could lighten us
not I, nor they saw it forthcoming
my neighbors’ pure zeal to shovel snow—
no small feat, no sir! Warmth… Priceless…
Written for dVerse, OLN #307, hosted by Mish — Eat your Grapes. (New Years Traditions). And since I recently wrote about Japan’s Joya no Kane Tradition, I’m happy to just read about the interesting traditions Mish mentions. Wow. Very diverse. Lovely.
My poem today is a result of the snow we had yesterday. It was lovely, the snow was, and the good part about it is a couple of poems about the snow nestled in my happy place. This is one of them. Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for reading. I wish you miracles in the new year.

Hi, Rob. Pulled this comment out of spam. Sorry for the delayed response: Thanks so much for appreciating and commenting. Happy new year. xoxo
Absolutely brilliant, starts with the world around you to the end of your finger, and then….such imagery…the horse, and the neighbour, shovelling away! I laughed and laughed and laughed…such well-chosen well-placed words…that “zealousness”…oh it sums it all up, it really does..
You’re too kind. Thanks for the encouragement, my lovely. I’ll keep trying to get all my ducks in a row. I bless you. xo
Yes Selma, ‘beauty in the ordinary’ – I admire the power and originality of your voice. Your writing is vibrant and brave…
Scott, dear one. Comments like yours are fodder to keep going. I’m so glad you found something to like here. I hope you return often. I bless you. Thanks. Happy new year. xo
Lovely, Selma 🥰 hope you continue to enjoy the miracles of the snow ❤️
I know I will. And good thing is those miracles pop up everywhere. I wish you plenty. Stay sweet. xoxo
A great poem Selma! I love your descriptions…

I have heard the quote about cutting wood: “When you cut your own wood it warms your twice!” This fits your snow warms me analogy!
Thanks for quoting me back that part. Not sure where it came from, hahaha.
As for the lovely quote you shared. Wow, yes. Just like that. And you might just see me borrow that analogy for one of my posts. Thanks so much. Blessings. xo
You are welcome! I enjoyed your poem. You are welcome to use the quote. I am not sure where it originated.
I could see you neighbour helping you out. How sweet that you begin a poem with something so simple as a broken nail. How we face each other in these pandemic times.
Hey. Thanks. So glad for your visit. Glad too you liked what I did in this one. And you are so right, the neighbors helped me and I helped them. Just as it should be. The snow helped us in this impromptu gathering. It was fun. (muscle aches, especially the jaw muscles, maybe… I have laughed, lots, but not with them in a long time. It was lovely. And we continue doing our best. I bless you. xoxo
Love the imagery Selma, a beautiful poignant read
I’m pleased you did, Deb. Thanks for reading and commenting. I bless you, and I hope you know I mean it wholeheartedly. Stay sweet.

… more miracles. Yes! Thanks ☺️ for the long visit. You rock. 💃🏼
Winter always “begins” for me after the first snow. It is freezing world outside but inside myself I feel the indescribable comfort of warmth, and I love how your poem brings back those feelings!
