Poetry that speaks to your mind and heart

Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023

Poetry has long been a struggle for me. I have a hard time understanding what the
artist is trying to convey. But Selma Martin has done an exceptional job at creating
poetry I understand and feel. Her poems In The Shadow of Rainbows: A Collection
of Songs of Presence
left me with a new appreciation for the art of poetry as well
as a fresh perspective on how to approach some of life’s more difficult times.

My favorite poems are:

Let Go: Life will always contain trouble, and this poem encourages the reader to
embrace the difficult and move forward.

When Death Comes: This poem reminds the reader to live life to the fullest without
regret. I especially enjoyed Martin’s belief in eternal curiosity. She took a tragic part
of life and approached it in another way.

I enjoyed this collection and am looking forward to rereading it. I have a feeling I
will find something new each time I take it in.

Poetry with all the feels

Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2023
In the forward to this book of poetry, the author hopes each reader will find at
least one poem that speaks to them directly. I found ten poems which are my
favorites: Kindled Echoes, When Death Comes, Enough, Could It Be,
Poseidon’s Lure, Ebb and Flow, Oh! That to Me, Insomnia, Sentencing, and
Slice of Life
. Some of the qualities that endeared these poems to me are
rhythm, rhyme, repetition, vivid imagery, positive messaging, and reliability.
If you like poetry or want to like poetry, you will love this collection.

Beautiful and powerful poetry!

Selma’s words danced across the pages right through to my heart. The way
she masterfully manipulates words to convey such deep meaning is simply
amazing. My words to describe hers: poignant, intuitive, refreshing, compelling,
emotional, and perceptive. The poems that spoke to me the loudest: “Ebb and Flow”,
“Insomnia”, “Failure”, “Golden Durability”, “Replete”, “There Is No Crime”, “Could It
Be”, “Little Vessel”, and “Slice of Life”.

Phrases that grabbed me:

“…where we swap slices of lived moments…”
“…night moves in slow, measured steps as if cradling a sleeping infant…”
“…just in time to see the leaf levitate and coax another leaf to play…”
“…in tones of splendidly tinged life lessons…”
“…in the waltz of each hour…”
“…like a cat, I slide in to stare at the shadows that dance…”
“…in the marshes of my soul has dwelled a black river guzzling a monsoon…”

I was sad when I came to the last page because I wanted more! Let Selma’s words
take you to another place – be it a far-distant memory, a thought-provoking notion,
or the simplicity that surrounds you. You will be glad you did. I’m so thankful that I
did and I can’t wait to get the paperback to add to my shelves!

THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE!!

“The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a
dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the
egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel
stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities.”
