Tanka Tuesday: Summer’s Waning, Fall is Nigh

Written for Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday 24 Seasons Syllabic Poetry Challenge, No. 48,
posted on 8/20/24, Part I, Fading Heat (August 23 – September 6) Shosho

At
the end
of summer,
when cicadas
turn down the volume,
viburnums show their reds
then charm with their black berries
and I’m overheated to boot,
on cat feet, without causing a stir
subtle she purrs in the hues of the wind.

Never has it been as profuse as when
in the thick of torrid summer heat
melancholy accommodates
for the soundscape with aplomb
garbed in vibrant patchworks
that quicken my steps
enlarge my heart
in time for
hellos
yet.

Syllabic Form: Stacked/Double Etheree

Aside1: Viburnum is also called “summer snowflake”–I find this coinage creative.
From April to June Viburnums have white lace cap clusters and in late summer red
then black berries. Here’s a photo of the summer snowflakes:

Aside2: We’re on vacation–by waterfalls in a cool area to enjoy Ayu once last time
this summer. And watermelons…

with a skip in my step and joy in my heart, ittekimasu ~ [Ittekimasu (行ってきます)]
to which you’d respond itterasshai ~ [Itterasshai (行ってらっしゃい)]

Aside3: Um, if you have a few minutes to spare, and feel like it, check out the prompt
at David’s W3 Wea’ve Written Weekly, please. Um, I’m the PoW there this week.
Don’t feel bad if you can’t participate; the inspiration from Louise Glück‘s poem
is really what I’d like to gift to you. Please enjoy it.

And if you missed a day, there was always the next,
and if you missed a year, it didn’t matter,
the hills weren’t going anywhere,
the thyme and rosemary kept coming back,
the sun kept rising, the bushes kept bearing fruit.”

‘Sunrise’, Louise Glück

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING MY DOUBLE ETHEREE TODAY.

Viburnum is new to me! I have heard about “summer snowflake” even seen those flowers but didn’t know they have such a poetic name. The double Etheree says a lot, I love it.
