Reblog: Tikkun Olam– How To Help Our World To Heal

It’s time we gave the planet prominence

Global heating, wildlife extinction, and pollution have been demanding our attention urgently for many years now. We’ve played deaf, we’ve played blind– we’ve been reckless and foolish. And naughty kids that we are, we’ve needed a kick in the butt, and so we got it.

Are we ready to do something about global heating, wildlife extinction, and pollution now?

Are we ready to give the challenge of biodiversity and the climate crises our attention once and for all?

I say yes, we are.

It’s embarrassing, really, that we needed to be brought down on our knees to get here, but now that we’re here, we better not mess things up anymore because ready or not, our world needs to heal further. As soon as restrictions lift, let’s all hit the ground running, willing to give of ourselves, our attention, priority, and preeminence over everything else– our Earth has been begging us. Time’s up, dear friends, let’s get started on the process to help our world to heal.

with the world
that will not only fix any damage
but also improve upon it.”

For April 22nd, 2020, Earth Day organizers started the year with high hopes and visions to mark our Earth’s fiftieth anniversary. It is long enough to appeal to our logical senses and ask us to shed shenanigans like playing deaf and blind.

“The nexus between nature, climate, and sustainable development was embodied in 2020. The year offered hope.” -Richard Deverell of The Guardian.

Countries all over the world had big plans for celebrating.

But…

But as we all know, the world citizens were grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and no gatherings for public celebrations materialized.

Changed plans, notwithstanding, we cannot afford to lose focus or momentum. And we should try to support the ambitions of COP15 and COP26 and help to bring them to fruition as this is our future.

“We should not let the momentum of what had been hailed as a “super year” for the environment be lost. Now is a time when the health of the planet and its people has never been so important. We are in an age of extinction and at the point where irreversible environmental damage could be wrought.” — Richard Deverell, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Mother Earth has gone through a couple of good years of convalescing; we’ve been on the mend from our careless ways as well. But you must agree, it’s hardly enough time to heal entirely. Therefore, the purpose of this short article today is twofold; one is to offer you my humble attempt of releasing you from guilt, and the other, is an intro to a practice called Tikkun Olam that I hope we can apply to all our interactions.

  • If you happen to feel somehow ill-prepared for the big task at hand, please allow me to point you to this link, where I release you from all guilt to help you reclaim what’s under the vicious layers. This is to honor a vow to do all we can to protect Mother Earth.
  • I invite you to read the article– Tikkun Olam or watch the 1-min. long YouTube video if you have time.
  • The good people at earthweal have weeks on end of splendid ideas in articles about how we can participate. They welcome your ideas too.
  • My very good friend, Ingrid at the Experiments In Fiction website works with organizations like the Global Assembly, directly linked to people at the top; doing the talking for us. Please check them out.

Let’s be more aware and reverent of our beautiful life
and the life that sustains it.
Let’s help our world to heal by making it
earth day every day.

Thank you for the mention, Selma – it is high time we all came together to help our world to heal, from all of the conflict and environmental damage we have wrought 💚

Kim, dear. I appreciate your words. Thanks for commenting. I bless you and wish you miracles. xoxo

Yes the world needs to heal. I want to be optimistic but, now in the US it seems we are taking a slight off ramp due to political issues and soaring gas prices.

Yet, I hear the never ending cries of our planet .

    1. Selma Martin

Thanks, Truedessa. Sure enough there’s that to see but we gotta believe in what is not visible to the eye. Let’s try to keep hope alive because that’s what will sustain us and give us the will to carry this to a fruitful end– doing our little deeds towards that end. What we have to lose if we don’t is EVERYTHING. i BLESS YOU AND WISH YOU MIRACLES.

Thanks for the nod to earthweal, and Ingrid’s site. Your words carry the urgency we should all be feeling. I suspect we will be forced to accommodate to nature, whether we like it or not, for she will react until we learn how to live with her – something aboriginal people have known how to do for thousands of years. Sigh. Happy you found earthweal.

I’m so grateful for your reply, Sherry. Thanks for having me here and giving me a great place to add my words. May they soar to the ears and hearts of those who need to be reminded. And my earthweal be the wind beneath. I will return to participate. stay sweet. I wish you miracles.

“Mother Earth has gone through a couple of good years of convalescing;” – that’s exactly how I saw it during pandemia. It was the flip side of things. A great post <3

Thanks for stopping. Comments mean the world to me. Won't you please leave one?
