In Remembrance of You
The Phoebes are to jog your memory
In case you’ve forgotten my name
Whiskey in Glencairn glass– two ounces,
Splash o’ water, to quench your thirst
Obon is a Buddhist festival. Observed in my area in August of the Lunar calendar — August 13th ~15th — it commemorates and remembers deceased loved ones. It is believed that the spirits of our departed return at this time to visit relatives. We visit graves.
This year, on our visit to the cemetery, I saw a whiskey tumbler placed on a tombstone.
That’s acceptance, I thought, and proof of love. Great reason.
That’s how this short poem came to be.
Assuming my name is Phoebe — like the bird, like the flower — In the poem, I place phoebes and whiskey in a Glencairn whiskey glass (his fave). Just in case my beloved wakes up thirsty.

Such a beautiful ritual! And I love the title of your verse.
ThANKS SO MUCH for the visit. Thrilled you came. My response to the prompt Aghast will be late. Something happened here behind the scenes and I’m having trouble getting that post out. In conversation with WordPress, but now I gotta get some zzzZs. You’ll get my sonnet in the morning (God willing) I bless you. Thanks for the visit.
At Ragtag you can respond whenever it is convenient for you. I hope you sleep well.
Always a pleasure to visit and read your words.
oh Selma,
This is totally cool. I love it.
Makes me happy when you visit, Diane. Thanks so much. You rock. Hey, I saw that photo of your legs above water; surfboard on the side. It was the greatest. Glad you’re in one beautiful piece, my friend. Happy summer. I wish you miracles.
