GloPoWriMo 2023, Day 29; W3 #52: My First Erasure Poem is Born

I mean frightened, all right!
up the shoulders, down the spine
in the budding morrow of night
shivers the sinew of the heart
like startles at 3 a. m. sharp

but don't just stand there darling dear
in the griddle of the middle
throw a giggle to start a wiggle
reminisce of the hustle bustle,
the sinew heals a frightened heart

and as soon as she said that
rose a noise, a gladsome joy
with an infernal host of horns
the sentry, standoffish, killed the lights
the assembly was shocked into silence.

The NaPoWriMo Prompt for Day Twenty-Nine
I am not sure I understood how to work on this prompt.

Start by reading Alberto Rios’s poem “Perfect for Any Occasion.”
Now, write your own two-part poem that focuses on a food or type of
meal. At some point in the poem, describe the food or meal as if it
were a specific kind of person. Give the food/meal at least one line
of spoken dialogue.

So I went off prompt and wrote based on this prompt instead. 😉

The prompt #52 guidelines for W3

  • Write a poem of at least six lines that’s heavy on consonance, assonance, or both;
    • Consonance: repetition of identical consonant sounds;
    • Assonance: repetition of similar vowel sounds.

Thanks so much for reading, and happy national poetry writing month.

I love this Selma and your blackout piece – I’m a big fan of found poetry. I have started a project on an old book I picked up and am gradually going through every other page to ‘find’ poems I find it’s quite therapeutic 🙂

    1. Selma Martin

Aww, it’s encouraging to know that you, who love these blackout gems, take a liking to mine. I’m so encouraged by your words. Thanks so much. I bless you, Poetisatinta xoxo

  7. Holly Jahangiri

I’m not sure I understood it, but I kind of felt it – feels like the sort of thing that goes bump in the night (maybe a rumbly in the tumbly?) and a laugh and a fright – at any rate, I liked your artwork, too.

    1. Selma Martin

He, he, dear Holly. like a thing that goes bump in the night… I like that. Don’t try to understand, it’s nonsense really. But for the artsy thing that resulted. Thanks for reading and commenting. xoxo

Your poem is intriguing and thought-provoking—how to overcome fear. In contrast, I love the humour in your light-hearted use of wiggle and giggle.

    1. Selma Martin

wiggle-giggle. hehe. Thanks, Lesley dearest. I appreciate the visit.

  10. Manja Maksimovič

Haha! I love your erasure poem!! Your shocked assembly is alive and properly terrified: “Oh, what the poet will do next?” 😉

    1. Selma Martin

My assembly is properly shocked in the darkness, indeed. hehe. When the juice is low one needs to improvise. HAHAHAH! Thanks for being here, dear friend. I bless you.

    1. Selma Martin

Low on diesel fuel, I was– haha. Glad you liked it, my friend– the shocked assembly!
