Festive Sonnet Sunday: Experiments In Fiction #Sonnet No. 5

Hay? Surely not common hay as they told
Of rare commingling of beauty and truth.
Who would believe such verse then and henceforth?
Design* of God’s uncomplicated lewth.

From far off they traveled, braving the cold,
Followed a star. It was hay, confirmed they:
Kings Kacper, Melchoir, Baltazar uphold
And to their knees, fell they without delay.

With chastity, we, each year remember--
Detached from false hopes on knees await Him.
Free of influence of pomp or flatter
In grace and detachment from glib, from scheme.

For hay will do for the king of all men
As emptied of self, knees & heads we bend.

The greatest things are accomplished in silence — not in the clamor and display of superficial eventfulness, but in the deep clarity of inner vision; in the almost imperceptible start of decision, in quiet overcoming and hidden sacrifice. Spiritual conception happens when the heart is quickened by love, and the free will stirs to action. The silent forces are the strong forces.  Let us turn now to the stillest event of all, stillest because it came from the remoteness beyond the noise of any possible intrusion — from God.

Romano Guardini’s, The Lord (German: Der Herr).

Quote Source: The Lord is a Christological book by Romano Guardini, a Roman Catholic priest and academic. It was first published in Germany in 1937, and an English-language translation appeared in 1954.

*the ultimate explanations – Guardini states – are to be found only in that impenetrable territory which Jesus calls “my Father’s will” — territory forever beyond the reach of
history.

Thanks for reading, dear friends.
To borrow from the quote above, may our hearts be quickened by love, and free will stir us to action so that spiritual conception can happen. And may we soon turn to our stillness within to allow the blessings to seep in.
I bless you and wish you safe and joyous festivities.
