Elegance Is One of Ten Attributes of Beauty: An Espresso

Elegance does not consist in putting on a new dress.” Coco Chanel

  • is more than a pretty shell
  • is not snobbery
  • is to be strong & assured in who you are and to move gently
    within that energy
  • is that dignified grace about your appearance, personal style,
    and behavior
  • is vulnerability and self-assuredness combined
  • is the quality of the depth of your wisdom
  • is not about tying a Hermes silk scarf perfectly

What else would you add to today’s topic? Who epitomizes elegance to you?

In the next few weeks, I’ll share my ideas on the ten attributes of beauty. Ten, in no
particular order. Perhaps at the end of these, we can talk about the order. Maybe.

UPDATE: From Sadje @ Keep it Alive, who added her voice to the conversation.
Thanks, Sadje.

Espresso is the name I decided on these short morsels of wisdom I
wish to share. They’re my humble attempt at helping you feel gladdened
and revitalized, and yes, sobered like when one drinks a shot of espresso.
If espresso is not what you like to consume, think of these as opportunities
for escapades to indulge in your favorite non-alcoholic drink. After all, it’s
meant to be a sobering moment. *wink*
Another wish is that you will share some of your short wisdom with me:
a link/pingback to your unique expressions (expressos) or espressos–
which I’ll then embed into the post to support you to hopefully gain more
exposure– or linger here with me long enough to enjoy a cuppa.

drink my coffee hot. But if you want yours cold, I will make yours cold today. *smile*

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting, dear readers. I look forward to hearing
your thoughts. I bless you and wish you miracles every day of the new month.

May despots’ proclivity for taunts, greed, and power cease to be. May peace prevail in every corner of the world. Amen.

When I joined an Earth Path shamanic group in northern England, I was interested to find Elegance as the allocated attribute for that elegant peronality the Deer.

I have subsequently (and indeed had previously) met people who identify with Deer as their Power Animal (Mine is Hare/Jackrabbit = Freedom).

My own relationship with Deer is edgy, because three years ago I contracted Lyme Disease from an infected bite of a deer tick… My relationship with Elegance is edgy too. It seems to take so much effort to achieve, in my experience…

So I have always felt uncomfortable at “elegant” as a compliment. I prefer to be that wild Hare, lolloping and free. Yet with its own grace.

Hi 💗, You said it! Grace is what elegance is. And
      Wild Hares/Jackrabbits
(= Freedom) have it. Yay. Just ask the Skin Horse, the oldest toy in the nursery of the Velveteen Rabbit story. 😊
I will not pretend to understand what Earth Path shamanic group is/identify with a power animal.
Neither will I attempt to make light of what you say— I find the peculiar little witch, Mary Poppins, an emblem of elegance.
The boisterous Tigger (Winnie The Pooh) enchantingly elegant.
The jaded Louise (Thelma & Louise) wild and elegant.
It’s the authentic grace of their personal style, and behavior that makes them so.
Sorry you’re uncomfortable about being called elegant so I will not.
Thanks for the comment. I truly appreciate it. Hope I didn’t go too off topic with my response. I’m happy to know your thoughts. Bless you. xo

I find that elegance is often one of those words and concept that seems beyond reach, only for the rich, privileged, famous, or powerful. However, I saw elegance in my grandmother who baked bread, worked in the fields, raised four daughters. Her hands and face wrinkled, but her eyes always, always twinkled. That was elegance!

    1. Selma Martin

What you saw in your lovely grandmother IS elegance. I’d stick with that image.
Elegance is like the concept of beauty!? Maybe— it’s in the eye of the beholder.
I’m so glad you read, Kathryn. Adore you. Xoxo blessings.

Your list describes elegance well, Selma! I think of elegance as humbled confidence with splashes of kindness and compassion. 🙂

    1. Selma Martin

Oh my gosh, yes. That’s what it IS.
AND it radiates from within. So really, it cannot be bought. It’s there or it isn’t. But really it’s there for those who know how to find it. Thanks for reading and commenting. Blessing you. XoXo

I have always had a fascination with elegance as it feels like it is a portrayal of something that is complete. In that fascination, I aspire to be elegant as I feel elegance is about precision, care, and consciousness; all elements that pertain to completion. 🙂

    1. Selma Martin

How lovely how you assess it. Completion. Oh yes, sure is. Thanks for reading and commenting, Jaya.

  6. Nope, Not Pam

I could never aspire to elegance but I like to see elegance in others. Lovely post Selma

    1. Selma Martin

I guess it depends on who you ask. You might not aspire to be but those close to you might know you already as elegant.
It’s like cuteness in babies. Babies don’t aspire to be cute. They just are! A lovely soul like yours radiates elegance I’m sure.
Thanks for reading and commenting, Sadje.
Today I wrote one for WSYS. Will post in the morning. Xoxo.

I like this, Selma! I think sometimes elegance is also maintaining your outward poise and dignity even when you’ve a storm going on inside yourself!

    1. Selma Martin

Oh yes. Absolutely! That’s elegance too. It’s the grace one brings to any situation. It’s how one handles strife and confrontations. Poise. Yup 👏 💗

I love your espresso moments, and this thought in particular:

“is vulnerability and self-assuredness combined.” You got me thinking…and for me, beauty is also forgiveness, and having the heart enough to do this. It gives one a certain type of light I think?

Thank you for always visiting me. Life’s been very up and down of late and I haven’t been able to catch up on blogger friends as much as I’ve wanted to. I shall rectify this as soon as <3

    1. Selma Martin

Verily verily! It gives one the lightness of being. And light to move on. So on point. I agree with you. Xoxo

I will not say I know what having a website of your caliber is: all those precious followers. But even I, with my lovely crowd, find it hard to do everything I intend to do. So do not strain dear one. I get you. Be well. Sending good vibes. XoXo
