Day Twenty-Three
on APRIL 23, 2022
Happy Saturday, all, and happy twenty-third day of Na/GloPoWriMo. Today’s featured participant is Jane Dougherty Writes, where you’ll find a gently melancholy response to Day 22’s repetition prompt. Our featured online magazine today is Peach Mag, which publishes poems on an ongoing basis, and then archives them based on yearlong “seasons.” Among the work that they’ve recently published, I’ll point you to Ai Li Feng’s “echolocation” and Bob Sykora’s “Crying on the Exercise Bike While Watching The Great British Bakeoff, February 2021.” And now for our daily (optional) prompt. Today I’d like to challenge you to write a poem in the style of Kay Ryan, whose poems tend to be short and snappy – with a lot of rhyme and soundplay. They also have a deceptive simplicity about them, like proverbs or aphorisms. Once you’ve read a few, you’ll see what I mean. Here’s her “Token Loss,” “Blue China Doorknob,” “Houdini,” and “Crustacean Island.” Happy writing!
A lovely prompt indeed that I’ll write to at a future date as I have a full house
of lovely boys (two, mine) and their significant others. Here are four more answers
to the question of the other day.
I hope you enjoy them in lieu of the prompt today.
Without identifying the question being asked, here are four more answers.
i I know you agree if two were the sum of one, then clearly we are two within the one
ii painful tears and grief do not dwindle happiness it’s the way of life makes the pieces whole
iii that sparkle you see is a reflection of it lonesome years depart you hear them leaving
iv through good times and bad from these vowes, I won’t waver a promise I’ll keep in my heart ever
Gogyohka is an unrestricted form. It usually contains five lines
but can contain four or six lines. The theme is unrestricted, too.
My theme is not mentioned as per the prompt of Day18.
Do you still believe you can identify the question? Let me know.
EXTRA-EXTRA-EXTRA
TRENDING:
On Twitter, they’re saying today is The Bard’s death anniversary.
Another source is saying today is St George’s Day, possibly Shakespeare’s
birthday. Hmm.
To be or not to be…
What they’re saying has brought me a recall of one short snappy poem with
rhyme and sound play— Written “around” him last fall and meets the prompt,
methinks.
Give it a read, please and together let’s celebrate this amazing day that blesses
us with the remembrance of this great poet.
Banner and buttons, Maureen Thorson.
Happy Earth Day Earthlings, and Happy Shakespeare Day too. I wish us miracles.
