Contemplating Windmills: Conceit Poem No.2 Originally Published in The Virtual Poetorium

The Reels In The Wheels Spinning

Revolving comes the carousel
of caches half-forgotten
forming footprints on the sand beach
from whence it had been hidden

cartwheeling come the psychedelic images
in an ever-spinning reel
whirling, churning, spiraling
inviting me to climb and dare to feel

snowballing, the ripples of emotions
loop me along in an avalanche
whisk me more, then spit me out
like Quixote, the knight errant tranced

at length, I surrender to feelings
long drained of pleasant discoveries
arrived, at last, the carousel stops
to deluges of sane memories:

of orbiting the moon after taking the pill
— the reels in the wheels, my life’s windmills

This poem first appeared in The Virtual Poetorium’s May 2022 edition. In July 2022 I reworked the poem into a Shakespearean sonnet and published it on Medium.

I’m publishing it here today as what I humbly consider a conceit poem: a Metaphysical Conceit (but I’m not entirely sure of this).

I’ve written only two conceits in my lifetime, so please don’t take lessons from me.

I don’t mean to sound cheeky, but I’m particularly fond of the way this poem ‘sounds. ‘If it’s not a conceit, then please enjoy it as a free-style poem.

I’m so happy you’re here reading my words. I wish you more laughs, more poetry, and more miracles. Thanks so much.
