a true story-essay of awe and divinity

There’s a lot of hurt in the world today and lots of stories to attest to that. But there are also good news stories. I know you carry stories of awesomeness and sincere prayer for humankind in your heart too. Please send them out into the world to balance the scales and bring more hope to the forefront. I want to read your story.

Because…
When you carry
a story of hope
and resilience in your heart, you want to share it with others.
This is one such story and I wish to share it with you this month.

I’m about to
turn 62 years old
this month, and I still cannot shut up about my birth story as I heard it from my late mother.

None of my siblings knew this, just as I’m unaware of their stories. But that’s okay — my mother conspired with all six of us and made each feel special. You’re special to me so here is that story.

I should have been a 1963 January baby, but circumstances made it so that I was ready to meet the humans assigned to me and found my way out at the end of October 1962.

But no one was ready for me in October. And my poor mother, who’d lost her first baby–my big sister–after a similar premature birth, was sent home with the foreboding words, “She won’t make it.”

Harsh words — especially for a new mother, but mine reasoned, “Those doctors studied hard and know only what they know.”

Yes, Mom was derailed, but she listened to her gut, put her belief in her higher power, and forwent the calamitous croaks of the doctors.

She also told me she believed in the miracle of the little bundle she took home to nurse. It became her creed, and she spent every waking moment in the pursuit of nourishing the miracle.

And by God, the gutsy lady succeeded!

Selma

At every birth day, Mother reminded me of what I was and renewed her belief in the divinity she carried within. How glad she was to prove those doctors wrong. Of course, we know that not all stories happen this way, but this one did.

I cherished my mother’s words and grew up believing I was a miracle and how lucky I was to be one!

Under her guardianship, I learned to feel the earth’s pulse under my feet, connect with my divinity, and discern miracles.

She gave birth to the miracle, and who would I be not to believe in me?

Today, I have a color, theme, frequency, and word.
(see featured image)

And I
want to
remind you that
we’re all part of something divine and extraordinary. But first, you need to believe.

A Prayer

May light shine brightly
in all corners of the world
on those who need it

May kindness become
the soundest normality
we give and receive
(in abundance)

May stories we tell
be of hope, awe, acceptance
for one another

May we find a way
to ward off those two degrees
point of no return

May we find our zone
of extraordinary
in everything lived

May all mist-ful dreams–
floundering insomniacs,
come to fruition
(for you and for me)

Author’s album: Mom and her miracle.

My
dear mother
resides in heaven now, and as I near another birthday, I hear the lovely words again.
This is enough to take my breath away.

(especially now as my dear husband and I are waiting for the birth of our first grandbaby).

On my special day, which comes on October 29th, I get to make a wish, and that wish is this:

I wish you miracles.

Hear it often enough, and you too will start to see the miracle that you are. You are
a wonder too.

This story was first published a couple of years ago on Medium. Read it there with this free link, if you like. No pressure.

Thanks for reading and may the rest of the year bring you the merriest and brightest days ever as you honor each one your way.

Every year around this time I feel more connected to everything.

                            Mother in heaven
I hear your laugh in tail-end
Echoes of my own

Such a beautiful and wholesome advice post, Selma. It’s indeed awesome how you and your mum beat the odds. You share a birthdate with my brother btw. Though In my family we never celebrated the boys’ birthdays, only the girls. I still don’t like public birthday celebrations, and I do mine in privacy(just me and my God).
I do celebrate friends and family on their birthdays, and I’ll celebrate you too.
