A Sonnet For Argos: Wea’ve Written Weekly

Beguiling is the smile and sidelong glance
That gives me pause and comfort through the day:
My source of joy and sweet utterances
So never in a day I walk astray.

I find myself in love and in a trance
When we lay cozy at the break of day.
Your coat, so warm and sweet--so soon I prance
For an early walk--makes me light and gay.

I like it best when your lips part sweetly,
Your ears perk up to listen without haste,
And with your tongue, slosh me up completely
In the mornings, your mood is at its best.

As I groom for work, you whimper meekly—
Man's staunch companion, you're by far the best.

Who is Argos?

Argos is one of the most beloved dogs in literature. Argos is Odysseus’ dog in “The
Odyssey,”
and he plays a small but important role in the book. When Odysseus returns
home to Ithaca after 20 years, Argos is the only one who recognizes him.

Argos is one of the first dogs ever to be named in Western literature.

And isn’t that a lovely name for man’s best friend?

This sonnet is written for W3 Prompt #58: Wea’ve Written Weekly for
. The PoW this week is Braden of Caffeinated Philosophy
who asks us to write according to this prompt:

Braden’s prompt guidelines

  • Write: A) sonnet, OR: B) villanelle on the theme of: an animal, plant, or object, describing its qualities or what can be learned from it.

I hope I worked the prompt the right way. Thanks, Braden and everyone
for reading.

Note: The rhyme in the end couplet is in the style of John Keats. (¿!?)
