At my friend Ingrid’s Experiments in Fiction Website, she has embarked on a feast she calls Halloween Sonnet Sunday, where she invites everyone to contribute a chilling sonnet. How very cool, right? Shakespeare and Poe in one serving!
Ingrid has such excellent organizational skills and is amassing quite a list at her
wonderful Experiments in Fiction Website, where she has set up a bodega to feature
all the posts that would otherwise be roaming the bloggersphere like
walking dead zombies.
I invite you to click on the link above and scroll down to the comments-bodega— your one-stop-shop, to get your fill of chilling sonnets that celebrate All Hallows’ Eve.
Oh, yes– I put on a brave face and asked to participate. And me and sonnets and spooky things…? Well, any-boohoo boo… Thanks to her generosity, I present you
with a polished-up sonnet.
Here’s Ingrid’s encouraging comment on mine:
Halloween chills with a dash of Shakespeare… Thanks to Selma Martin for this terrifying tale of Halloween revenge. I love the coinage of the term ‘Hallowmate’ – I certainly wouldn’t want to become one! You have been warned, be careful who you spurn this Halloween…
Hallowmate
With bitter regret, mine heart’s been laden
Since Hallowmas when thou our bed-vow broke
And now perjured be roam I loath-burdened
Waiting for the day this prank I do choke
Post hoc thine eyes see I as woeful shame
The smartest joke thine evils fortified…
Please read it, my lovelies, and drop me a comment there OR here.
Visit for the YouTube video— handpicked by this multi-talented author– that
complements the poem so beautifully:

Thanks so much and happy All Hallows’ Eve.

Thank you so much Selma! I feel like a zombie actually today: I couldn’t quite sleep through the night as I was busy nurturing my guest sonnets… 🧟♀️
Oh, no— Not a 🧟♀️ not you! Very altruistic lady.
I send you good vibes: sleep is important. Get yours.
But already, this sonnet festival you gave birth to is a big undertaking that I give you a standing ovation for.
Like I said before, you wow me. All the best, Ingrid. Be well. xoxo
Thank you, Selma, you too!
I love it Selma, do write more of it 😁😊

My pleasure 💕❤️💕
I love this! Happy Halloween 🎃 Selma!
Thanks, Jen. A bit on the dark side but had fun with the voice of this one. Thanks for reading. ♥️
I love the language of your sonnet and the word “Hallowmate” as it sounds alluringly and deceptively pretty!
Aww. You do? Thanks. Tried to imitate the great man’s style. And manipulate it to sound dark 🤦🏻♀️ and chilling. So glad you found it to your liking. I’m encouraged by your words.
a sinister classic indeed … love Ingrid’s song which was a perfect match for your sonnet!
It was a perfect match indeed. I loved the rabbit but hope the snake in it was all made up.
Thanks for reading and commenting. 👏 💜 👻
probably real as we train them here 🙂
Train snakes 🐍
Yeah, Kate, scare me more. 😱 😳
Riveting!
Happy Halloween 🎃
💕 👏
Wow, the last line is very very creepy 😬 So so cleverly written, in typical Selma style. Shakespeare language only makes it all the more dramatic and sophisticated. The spooky vibes are real! 😀
You read it to the end, Sam? Spooky right? I’m glad you read. Thanks a bunch. You rock, young lady. xoxo
