The update on Amazon is for The 60th Anniversary Edition Hardcover
Hailed as the most successful exhibition of photography ever assembled, The Family of
Man opened at The Museum of Modern Art in January 1955. It was groundbreaking in its
scope–503 images by 273 photographers originating in 69 countries–as well as in the
numbers of people who experienced it on its tour through 88 venues in 37 countries.
As the permanent embodiment of Edward Steichen’s monumental exhibition, this
publication reproduces all of the 503 images that Steichen described as “a mirror of the
essential oneness of mankind throughout the world. Photographs made in all parts of
the world, of the gamut of life from birth to death.” To celebrate the 60th anniversary
of this classic and inspiring work, MoMA is releasing this handsome hardcover edition.
Thanks for reading my American Sentence today.
ASIDE
I’ve had this extraordinary photography book for close to thirty years—I’ve been entertained by the photographs in a plethora of ways. And saddened and made whole again by leafing through the pages.
“…the gamut of life from birth to death.”
I found something in this book that I have no words or labels for and all I wish to accomplish and convey here is admiration for this art form.
To think that in my life this inexplicable joy can be taken away from me by AI is unacceptable. Mind blowing. Let’s find a way to ward off that kind of encroachment to our human souls. AI has no place in the arts.
