“For the visually challenged reader, this image shows a white ghostly figure suspended
in the air over a crop of pumpkins. The trees in the background are lit by an eerie red
light.
Waiting for your responses.
Thanking you all for joining this prompt.” ~ Sadje

This post is written for Sadje’s WDYS prompt # 259- 21st October, 2024. I’ve turned scaredy cat in recent years, so forgive my lame attempt here. Things are scary enough
for children and grownups as they are. But I managed three short haiku to garnish the
fright story the image dragged out of me. I hope you enjoy it.

All Hallows Eve fright
Hanging onto her brother’s shirt tail, Lilly vowed not to let go until they arrived
at Grandma’s. But every time she asked how close they were, Linus mumbled they
were almost there.
“The stars, Linus–they’re out! Mama said we’d be there before nightfall.”
“Hush, we’re almost there!”
“Admit it. We’re lost, right?”
“Nuh-uh! We jus’ need to cross the melon field,” he said, walking to the gate, “the house
is jus’ ’round the grove.” But…

“Fuggedaboutit,” Linus loud-whispered and dragged his sister by the hand in the other
direction where flashlights pointed towards them.
“It’s them, it’s them,” he consoled, and holding his little sister close, the two walked
breathless into Grandma’s arms.

aside: The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word Pepõn, which means
large melon.
Fun fact:
This was the hit song the year I was born.
“This is arguably the most successful novelty song of all time. Bobby Pickett
accomplished the rare feat of reaching the top 100 music chart three times with
the same song. On October 20, 1962, the original release hit #1 in the US.” Songfacts
Nine days before I was born. Wow! It’s still being played at Halloween today. *wow*

Aww Shweta. Happy to be in your company. So much hurt and disfunction in the world today I cannot add more to it by “thinking up” scary scenarios. Not me. May goodness and freedom arrive for all. Bless you. 🤗
Indeed, Selma. I’m totally with you. Thank you. Hope you have a great day too! 🤗

Well done, Selma, on this lovely poetic post. I am struggling to write anything Halloweeny this year.
